Final Grunge Board

Grunge

When I started looking at the grungier side of romance I had to look harder as the all the new collections are for spring so there weren’t so many collections using the harsh dark colours and themes.

There were certain designers that always seem to have querky sort of designs that I checked out and in a lot of ways different collections related to our theme. Those designers were Rodarte, Alexander Mqueen and Gareth Pugh.

Rodartes theme was really cool as it stated that it was to show that someone could be scared but still look beautiful and the way they conveyed that was by ruining lots of fabrics this kind of relates to our theme as the Romance side of the theme is going to seem really beautiful with the colours and fabrics and the grunge side is going to be the opposite and we need to show that by manipulating all the fabrics.

For the grungier side of romance we were trying to find images to reflect ‘lost darkness’ the feeling of falling out of love when you feel alone and your not quite thinking straight. I looked for longer silohettes and bigger shapes to give the feeling of carrying all those memories with you that you just cant seem to let go and rebellious sort of fashion through colour and fabric.

I think the best colours to convey this sort of theme were the deep reds and purples to add some sharpness and colour and the obvious black and grays to give that sense of darkness.

I started looking for Romance fashion images as soon as we had our first meeting as I had the idea in my head and I knew the kind of images we all were imagining!

With out Romance theme we had the idea of trying to find images to convey the idea of falling and being in love so I started looking out for very feminine fashion, soft sheer fabrics and soft pastel colours to reflect that naïve innocence.

Valentino’s collection was very in sync with all the fabrics, colours and detail and reflected the romance theme really well using lots of soft tones such as nude, gold, rose, lavender and gray. They said in the review of the show that ‘they wanted to tell a new fairy tale’.

The more designers I started looking at I found more exciting, inspiring images.

For example Victor & Rolf s collection is a very exaggerated romance style fashion and some of the colours are quite strong but still the details they’ve used such as big ruffles and huge pleats to create amazing shapes that are really inspiring.

The fabrics I thought would reflect the theme best were lots of soft fabrics that we could create lots of amazing ruffles such as organza, silk, satin and tulles.

Also the main colours I thought worked best were the nudes, lilacs, gray’s and peachy pinks.

What She Likes:

‘Chloe’ is a Parisian female, born in France but lives in London, she is a commuter, and she spends her working weeks as a freelance photographer in the heart of London but on the weekends, slips away to her family home in the cozy villages of France. Her job takes her all around the world but she regards London as her 2^nd home, she’s quirky, cool, and fun. Her love for beautiful clothes began when she picked up her first camera- through photography she was able to appreciate fashion, understand how it makes the world go round and from this developed her own personal style for unique things.

She regards shopping as a very enjoyable pastime, she scours through the rails of thrift stores and boutiques like ‘Beyond retro’ to find vintage pieces and forgotten garments, when having to buy her essentials she flocks to high street stores like H&M, Gap and Zara. Her approach to the fashion industry is similar to that of art-, she constantly visits museums in and around London and those in the places to which she travels.

Her job causes her to be always up to speed with all the creative industries so she does this buy reading journals and magazines like ‘British and French Vogue’, ‘Grazia’, ‘Vanity Fair’, ‘Sunday Times Style’ and ‘The photographer’. She loves going out with her friends, going to the classic cinemas like the ‘Odeon’ and occasionally watching a play at any London theatre.

Her style is borderline Parisian Marie Antoinette boudoir but with a dark angel warriors twist to it, she relishes in buying designer and her favorites’ are ‘Chloe, Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler and Vivienne Westwood’ but she favors thrift and vintage and likes to pick her jewelry from flea markets.

What She Dislikes:

She is not a fan of mass-market high street chains like New Look and Primark; she dislikes the current trend of ‘fast fashion’. She is the type of person who invests in her wardrobe and expects her money and the garment to work for her (so she’ll buy a £500 winter coat and expect it to last for at least 5 years). She doesn’t like junk food, camping or music festivals.

Jacket Research with Jo!

Miss selfridge

The main things I noticed in Miss selfridge was lots of tailored coats with contrast lining. There was lots of draping details and pleated cuffs on jackets.

I thought this blazer was cool it was jersey fabric with flower print all over, this was something I hadn't really seen in any other stores there were also lots of cropped jackets too.

This smart coat had really nice pleating detail on the shoulders and cuffs with made the jacket more fitted and a really cute shape. These bright bold colours were around in a lot of the high street stores!

Topshop!

Topshop had a lot of choice in style an colours of jackets!

Blazers are still very popular however Topshop had more variety in fabrics of blazers the first picture was a silk blazer and the third picture was velvet which is a huge trend this winter! I thought the middle one was a nice shape how the front is more drapey than a normal style blazer!

I loved the bold colours of these two style jackets! This funnel neck was a popular detail in quite a few jackets i had seen in many shops.

This coat was really cool, I tried it on and loved the shape of it it was really fitted and smart. I thought it was cool had it had the gold buttons and zips! Also I noticed lots of jackets had these sort of straps on the cuffs to make them more fitted and its a nice detail, also how they had added the bows on the back in the same way and this was also a detail to make the jacket more fitted as it pulls it in.

Faux Fur coats are everywhere this winter! I liked these Topshop ones as they were actually really nice and soft some of the faux fur coats around were a lot more tacky and had been made in cheap looking fabrics!

Mango

The military Jackets were very popular across all the stores! This one had quite nice detailing with the epaulets on the shoulders and the vintage gold buttons.

There were also lots of leopards prints around and faux fur!

The woven knit jackets were cool but I can see these jackets being more popular with an older customer. I thought Mango would be one of our customers main shops but I was actually quite suprised at the quality of the fabrics. A lot of the jackets/ coats looked very cheap but the jackets were quite pricey as well ranging from £100 - £200!

Kookai

This was the only Sheepskin coat I had seen and it was a really nice shape and really cosy fabric. This one looked like it had probably been inspired by one of the designers collections maybe the Chloe blanket style coats.

This one was a biker style jacket with really nice soft leather! There biker jackets in every store in town so that is a really key style at the moment.

Kookai's prices were also in the region of £100 - £200 a jacket but all the fabrics were actually really good quality and they looked expensive so I think kookai offered better value for money rather than some of the other concessions in House of Fraser!

Allsaints

Allsaints were quite expensive but again the fabrics they used were big thick heavy wools. they had lots of nice shapes and details, I noticed a lot of pleating details and lots of buttons!

D&G Spring 2010 Ready to Wear

Here are a few looks from Dolce and Gabbana's latest runway show spring 2010...some of them are very inline with our 'grunge' theme. I chose these looks in particular because they all intertwine with our brief. For our fabric we can take inspiration from these designs by using texture, applique and the use of sheer fabrics/lace can be for both the 'romance' and 'grunge' side.

Heyy this is Rodarte 2010 collection! I thought this vid was quite cool because when they are explaining the theme some bits are quite similar to ours! Also they've used lots of fabrics that they have worked into so could be some ideas for how we could work into the fabric!

The clothes kind of reminded me of our grungey romance too!

Romance board x

Hey this isn't a final piece or anything! i just thought i would show u my mood board developing so u guys can tell me if theres any other ideas you think i should include! I thought it was probably best to keep the trend boards quite clear for the presentation and not clutter them too much. I am going to make the background a bit more fun somehow still trying to get use to photoshop lol. I thought with the middle space i'm going to make a colour palette to go with the trend an put some fabric swatches on. There are lots of past seasons that have got cool collections that would reflect our theme but sarah said it has to be future trends so i just stuck to the newest and these are from spring 2010!
